A gentle spring walk through Old Amersham on 17 April 2026, exploring local plants, chalk streams, history and seasonal change with expert botanist Karen van Oostrum.

In partnership with Wild Amersham, join local botanist Karen van Oostrum for a gentle, curiosity-led walk through some of Old Amersham’s most characterful places.

This relaxed spring amble follows the River Misbourne chalk stream, passes through St Mary’s churchyard, and continues down the historic High Street. Along the way, Karen will help you notice the plants growing right on your doorstep, explain how the local landscape and chalk streams shape what thrives here, and share how Amersham’s industries and places have evolved over time. You’ll also enjoy comparing historic images with what you see today — spotting what has changed, and what has quietly endured.

This walk is the second of four seasonal walks (winter, spring, summer and autumn), all following the same route to reveal how nature and place shift through the year. While not aimed specifically at families, children with an interest in nature and local history are very welcome.

Karen brings a wealth of knowledge and a warm, engaging style. She is a Biology graduate of Oxford University with a PhD in wheat genetics, formerly Head of Education at Cambridge University Botanic Garden, and now works with the Field Studies Council at FSC Amersham Field Centre, delivering botany courses and supporting local conservation projects.
