David Fernandez, a Manchester-born singer and songwriter, has been immersed in the music world since the age of 19. Over the course of his career, he has collaborated with an impressive list of international artists, including Lisa Stansfield, Rowetta, and the late, legendary soul vocalist Denise Johnson.

Much of David’s recent music has been recorded at the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London, where he has worked alongside world-renowned producers such as Giles Martin, Matthias Stalter and Chris Marshall. When he isn’t writing or performing, he lends his talents to acting and voiceover work for both television and radio.

But despite a life surrounded by global talent and big-city energy, David’s heart was unexpectedly captured by somewhere far more tranquil.

In early summer 2025, a spontaneous “curiosity trip on the Metropolitan Line” brought him to Amersham for the very first time. What he expected to be a simple day out became something much more meaningful. He was, by his own account, “absolutely blown away” by the town’s beauty, history and unmistakable magic.

“It’s one of the most magical places I’ve ever seen,” he shared in a recent radio interview — a sentiment that beautifully echoes what so many local residents and returning visitors already know.

For a musician who has travelled the world and worked in one of the most famous recording studios on the planet, Amersham’s charm clearly strikes a special chord.

And we couldn’t be more delighted to have inspired him.

Join the artistic journey with local artist, Stephen Charlton, from Amersham to Aldgate.

The post Local artist captures good vibrations on London’s tube network. appeared first on Visit Amersham.

Artist and tube traveller Stephen Charlton, realised that drawing a straight
line whilst riding the tube is a pointless exercise – literally. This gave him the
inspiration to create drawings that form a visual record of his journey from
station to station throughout the underground system.

‘Tubelines’ is his series of one-off original pen drawings that look like seismic
wave outputs we see when an earthquake occurs. It’s fascinating to see that each
tube line has its own energy fingerprint that makes it distinct from the others.
Charlton says, “We become oblivious to the jolts, bumps and sways on the tube
as it meanders through the twists and turns of each journey. Some lines are
smoother than others, and this can be seen in my work as they become visually
frenetic as the ride gets bumpier. ”

Each drawing is a unique record from the start to finish of a journey. Charlton
has to take an arm break at each stop but not taking the pen from the paper, as
drawing vertically for extended periods can be physically challenging. Fellow
commuters often watch the work being created and appreciate the opportunity
to see an artist at work, some even ask for a copy for themselves as a record of
their daily commute.

Framed signed limited edition (250) prints are are available at http://www.stephencharlton.com

Charlton’s next challenge is to map the Circle Line, drawing from the centre of
the page spiralling toward the edge of the paper. Watch this space.

On Sunday, September 8th, 2024, Amersham’s beloved Heritage Day returned with a full slate of exciting activities, offering something for every age group. The streets of Old Amersham were bustling with visitors eager to explore the rich history of this charming town while enjoying a lively, family-friendly atmosphere.

The day kicked off with a classic car and traction engine display, attracting car enthusiasts and curious onlookers alike. The display lined the High Street with vintage models, offering a snapshot of automotive history.

For families, there was no shortage of entertainment. Children’s funfair rides and an exciting axe throwing provided hours of fun for the families. The birds of prey display was a particular highlight, allowing children and adults to get up close with these majestic creatures. The medieval re-enactments brought a touch of historical drama to the day, with actors in full costume performing battles, demonstrating old-world skills, and recreating scenes from centuries past.

At the street market, local artisans and vendors sold a wide range of goods, from handmade crafts to delicious local produce. Visitors could wander through the stalls, sampling food, picking up unique treasures, and enjoying the community spirit.

The much-loved heritage bus rides made their return, offering a nostalgic journey through Amersham’s historic streets. These buses, part of Amersham’s rich transport heritage, provided a fun way to explore the town.

One of the must-see stops of the day was the Amersham Museum, which opened its doors for the event, giving visitors a chance to explore the fascinating history of the town. The museum offered interactive displays and exhibits, perfect for both adults and children wanting to dive deeper into the town’s past.

Throughout the day, live performances added to the festive atmosphere. The streets were filled with the sound of music, Morris dancers, and entertainers, keeping the energy high and the crowds engaged.

Did you know that, taken together, UK gardens are larger than all our national nature reserves combined? Little patches of green on pavements and along roads provide vital stopping-off points for pollinating insects. Trees and shrubs provide shelter and nesting spaces for birds and small mammals. Every single garden, however small, can play a role in reversing the terrible decline in common garden birds such as sparrows and chaffinches and of the insects they feed on. You can help in your garden or on your balcony. Try to grow open flowers and ensure something is flowering at any time of year; leave some ‘weeds’ in your lawn, particularly daisies and dandelions (which flower nearly all year round and thus provide vital nectar when little else is found). Be a little untidier: leave a strip of your grass a little longer, and create some piles of wood or leaves so that insects, amphibians and endangered species such as hedgehogs can shelter there. A small pond or bird bath is a great addition, as is feeding garden birds. Every little bit helps!

5. Community Togetherness: A Year of Shared Endeavours
