As Community Champion at Tesco Superstore Amersham, BJ has become one of those familiar local faces who always seems to be helping bring people together, whether that’s supporting charities, community groups, schools, fundraising events, or simply connecting organisations that can help one another.

We often use the phrase “community spirit”, but in this case it’s easy to put a face to it.

Much of David’s recent music has been recorded at the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London, where he has worked alongside world-renowned producers such as Giles Martin, Matthias Stalter and Chris Marshall. When he isn’t writing or performing, he lends his talents to acting and voiceover work for both television and radio.

But despite a life surrounded by global talent and big-city energy, David’s heart was unexpectedly captured by somewhere far more tranquil.

In early summer 2025, a spontaneous “curiosity trip on the Metropolitan Line” brought him to Amersham for the very first time. What he expected to be a simple day out became something much more meaningful. He was, by his own account, “absolutely blown away” by the town’s beauty, history and unmistakable magic.

“It’s one of the most magical places I’ve ever seen,” he shared in a recent radio interview — a sentiment that beautifully echoes what so many local residents and returning visitors already know.

For a musician who has travelled the world and worked in one of the most famous recording studios on the planet, Amersham’s charm clearly strikes a special chord.

And we couldn’t be more delighted to have inspired him.

‘Tubelines’ is his series of one-off original pen drawings that look like seismic
wave outputs we see when an earthquake occurs. It’s fascinating to see that each
tube line has its own energy fingerprint that makes it distinct from the others.
Charlton says, “We become oblivious to the jolts, bumps and sways on the tube
as it meanders through the twists and turns of each journey. Some lines are
smoother than others, and this can be seen in my work as they become visually
frenetic as the ride gets bumpier. ”

Each drawing is a unique record from the start to finish of a journey. Charlton
has to take an arm break at each stop but not taking the pen from the paper, as
drawing vertically for extended periods can be physically challenging. Fellow
commuters often watch the work being created and appreciate the opportunity
to see an artist at work, some even ask for a copy for themselves as a record of
their daily commute.

The day kicked off with a classic car and traction engine display, attracting car enthusiasts and curious onlookers alike. The display lined the High Street with vintage models, offering a snapshot of automotive history.

For families, there was no shortage of entertainment. Children’s funfair rides and an exciting axe throwing provided hours of fun for the families. The birds of prey display was a particular highlight, allowing children and adults to get up close with these majestic creatures. The medieval re-enactments brought a touch of historical drama to the day, with actors in full costume performing battles, demonstrating old-world skills, and recreating scenes from centuries past.

At the street market, local artisans and vendors sold a wide range of goods, from handmade crafts to delicious local produce. Visitors could wander through the stalls, sampling food, picking up unique treasures, and enjoying the community spirit.

The much-loved heritage bus rides made their return, offering a nostalgic journey through Amersham’s historic streets. These buses, part of Amersham’s rich transport heritage, provided a fun way to explore the town.

One of the must-see stops of the day was the Amersham Museum, which opened its doors for the event, giving visitors a chance to explore the fascinating history of the town. The museum offered interactive displays and exhibits, perfect for both adults and children wanting to dive deeper into the town’s past.

Throughout the day, live performances added to the festive atmosphere. The streets were filled with the sound of music, Morris dancers, and entertainers, keeping the energy high and the crowds engaged.

Heritage Day 2024 truly had something for everyone, whether you were there for the history, the funfair, or simply a lovely day out. The perfect weather made the day even more memorable, with sunny skies providing the ideal backdrop to this fantastic community event.
